Former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi joins Fleetwood Town

League One side Fleetwood Town sign former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi on a short-term deal for the rest of the season.

League One side Fleetwood Town have secured the services of former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old joins the Cod Army on a short-term deal following his release by Championship strugglers Bolton Wanderers last month.

"We certainly couldn't get any more experience than Shola Ameobi and we are absolutely delighted with that," Fleetwood boss Steven Pressley told the club website. "He is not only a very good player, he is a terrific character that can bring a lot to the group.

"It is vital that he has been playing as sometimes unattached players at this stage in the season, the one thing they are lacking is a level of fitness.

"Shola has been involved at Bolton Wanderers on a regular basis for the vast majority of the season and he is raring to go ahead of Saturday's trip to Port Vale."

Ameobi made 312 appearances and scored 53 goals during his 14-year stay at Newcastle, which came to an end in 2014.
