Mark Sampson hails "outstanding" England team after victory over Mexico

England coach Mark Sampson hails the "outstanding" contribution of his players as they grab their first win in the Women's World Cup 2015 with a 2-1 victory over Mexico.

England coach Mark Sampson has hailed the "outstanding" performance of his side as they recorded their first win in the Women's World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Mexico.

Sampson's side were looking to come back from a disappointing opening-game defeat to France, and they duly responded by grabbing two goals in the last 20 minutes of the encounter to increase their chances of reaching the last 16.

"It was a positive result for us, I am really pleased for the players. They had to respond in a positive manner and they did. Our little mini Messi Fran Kirby scored and we built from that," said Sampson, according to BBC Sport.

"Special players step up in special moments and there is more to come from Fran. It wasn't just Fran today, though, the team was outstanding. Players from the sidelines made a difference too.

"They are all big games. We are sensing this is a huge chance and we have to build on this performance. The players have Colombia in their mind and will be ready."

The Three Lionesses will be hoping for a win in their final Group F match against Colombia next week.
