League One roundup: Peterborough United book playoff spot

Peterboro book a playoff spot to relegate Shrewsbury, while Notts County march toward survival.

Peterborough United booked a place in the League One playoffs and relegated Shrewsbury Town in the process with a 4-2 win at New Meadow this afternoon.

United went into the clash knowing that a victory would keep their hopes of promotion alive, but their top-six pursuit suffered a hiccup when Jon Taylor nodded the hosts ahead on five minutes.

However, a nine-minute brace from Conor Washington helped flip the game on its head, before Lloyd Isgrove pounced to double the advantage shortly before the half-hour mark.

Tom Bradshaw threw Salop the slimmest of lifelines in their survival bid by reducing the arrears shortly before the break, but Josh McQuoid pounced in the dying stages to seal the win for Posh and consign Michael Jackson's men to life in League Two next term.

In contrast, Notts County took a huge step toward preserving their League One status by beating nine-man Swindon Town 2-0 in a feisty affair at Meadow Lane.

Goals from Alan Sheehan and a late strike from Callum McGregor sent the Magpies five points clear of the relegation zone with one to play - third-from-bottom Carlisle United have a game in hand.

The contest was marred as a melee between the sides in the closing stages saw Troy Archibald-Henville and Nathan Thompson dismissed for the Robins.

Likewise, Colchester United moved six points clear of the danger zone with an impressive 4-1 win over runners-up Brentford.

Three first-half strikes from Marcus Bean, Alex Wynter and a Freddie Sears penalty saw the U's register a commanding 3-1 half-time lead, with Stuart Dallas reducing the arrears for the Bees.

Sears bagged his brace midway through the second half, however, as United go a long way toward retaining their presence in the division.

Meanwhile, division champions Wolverhampton Wanderers reached the milestone 100-point mark after earning a 1-1 draw away to Coventey City this afternoon.

David Edwards broke the deadlock for the visitors on 83 minutes, before a Danny Batth own goal moments later saw the Sky Blues wrestle a point from the centurions of League One.

Results in full: Bradford City 2-1 Crawley Town, Bristol City 0-0 Crewe, Carlisle United 0-1 Oldham Athletic, Colchester 4-1 Brentford, Coventry 1-1 Wolves, Leyton Orient 1-1 Tranmere Rovers, Notts County 2-0 Swindon, Preston 3-1 Gillingham, Rotherham 2-2 MK Dons, Shrewsbury Town 2-4 Peterborough United, Stevenage 3-2 Walsall
