Liverpool 'will not rival Chelsea for Timo Werner'

Liverpool will not look to hijack Chelsea's bid for Timo Werner, according to a report.

Liverpool have allegedly conceded defeat in their pursuit of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, and the Reds will not rival Chelsea for the striker's services.

Earlier today, it was reported that Frank Lampard's side have agreed a deal to bring the 24-year-old to Stamford Bridge on a five-year contract.

Liverpool have long been credited with an interest in the prolific frontman, but it appears that Chelsea have beaten them in the race for Werner's signature.

Jurgen Klopp's side were supposedly reluctant to trigger the Germany international's £54m release clause amid the coronavirus pandemic, and according to the Evening Standard, Liverpool will not attempt to hijack Chelsea's bid for the former Stuttgart man.

The report claims that Klopp is confident in the ability of his current attackers - with Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino expected to step up to the plate while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane take part in the Africa Cup of Nations next year.

Werner has netted 25 times in the Bundesliga during the 2019-20 campaign as Leipzig lie third in the table.
