Preview: Charlton Athletic vs. Brentford

Sports Mole peers ahead to Saturday afternoon's London derby in the Championship between Charlton Athletic and Brentford.

Brentford's first London derby of the season in the Championship takes place on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Charlton Athletic.

The Bees have won two in a row for the first time this season and will think that they can make it three against a Charlton side on a dire run.

Charlton

How much longer has Guy Luzon got? The Addicks boss has failed to lead his side to a win in their last eight league matches, drawing just two to gain two points from a possible 24.

Charlton's slump saw them drop into the bottom three earlier this week as they were crushed 3-0 at home by Preston North End, a fellow struggler who were on a nine-game winless streak themselves.

Luzon has come out fighting since, insisting that he does not feel under threat and today giving a passionate speech at his pre-match press conference.

"I promise them we will turn it around," he told reporters. "It is about momentum. We can run with it if we can start the momentum against Brentford."

One trait of Luzon's team this season is that they start slowly. If matches finished after just 45 minutes, the Addicks would be rockbottom with only seven points to their name. They are also one of three teams yet to score in the opening quarter of an hour.

Back-to-back wins for the Bees have moved them up to 15th and four points clear of Charlton at the top of the drop zone.

Lee Carsley appears to have found a winning formula, but he again said after Wednesday night's 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers that he is not interested in taking on the full-time head coach's job at Griffin Park.

Marco Djuricin and Philipp Hofmann were on the scoresheet at Molineux, while on Saturday it was an Alan Judge double that proved decisive at home against Rotherham United.

Judge is usually known for his chance-creating - only Blackburn Rovers' Craig Conway has set up more in the league this season - but the Irishman now has five goals in 12 matches to lead the way for the Bees.

Before Wednesday's win at Wolves, Brentford had lost three of four on the road and only scored more than one away from Griffin Park once, when they claimed a 4-2 victory over 10-man Bristol City in August.

Team News

Luzon has been hurt by several key injuries this season, but Charlton could welcome back Johnnie Jackson, Simon Makienok, Franck Moussa, Reza Ghoochannejhad and Stephen Henderson in two days' time.

However, Alou Diarra will have to sit out after collecting his fifth booking of the season against Preston.

For the visitors, Hofmann will be hoping to return to the starting lineup for the first time since August after netting against Wolves.

Sergi Canos came off the bench at Molineux after impressing against Rotherham and could return on the wing for the trip to The Valley.

Charlton possible starting lineup:
Henderson; Solly, Sarr, Fox, Jackson; Bergdich, Ba, Cousins, Holmes-Dennis; Watt, Makienok

Brentford possible starting lineup:
Button; Yennaris, Dean, Tarkowski, Bidwell; McCormack, Woods, Diagouraga; Canos, Djuricin, Judge

Head To Head

Charlton are unbeaten in four league games against Brentford. Three of those were victories and the most convincing of all was a 3-0 triumph when they last met in February.

Brentford have only scored once in those four matches and also only kept just one clean sheet in their last nine league games against the Addicks.

We say: Charlton 1-1 Brentford

Looking at the table, a home match against Brentford would seem to offer Charlton and Luzon a good chance for a much-needed win, but the Bees have improved recently and will fancy taking at least a point back across the capital.
