Burnley ease past Stade Nyonnais in first pre-season game

Burnley get their preparations for their first season back in the Premier League off to a winning start, beating Swiss side Stade Nyonnais 3-1.

Burnley have begun their pre-season preparations with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Stade Nyonnais in Switzerland this evening.

The newly-promoted Clarets scored all of their goals in the first half as Andre Gray, Ashley Barnes and Michael Keane all found the back of the net in Nyon.

The visitors made a bright start to the match, with Gray in particular causing problems as he saw two early shots blocked before being denied from point-blank range having latched on to George Boyd's cut-back.

Last season's Championship Player of the Year would not have to wait much longer to break the deadlock, though, as he raced on to a pass from Barnes before slamming his finish into the roof of the net.

Barnes turned from provider to goalscorer just five minutes later as Burnley tightened their grip on the game, nodding home at the far post following a short corner routine from Sean Dyche's side.

Barnes then tested the keeper with another effort shortly before the half-hour mark, but despite Burnley's dominance it was Nyonnais who got the third goal of the game when Stipe Simunac rifled an effort into the bottom corner.

The Clarets hit back immediately, though, restoring their two-goal advantage when Keane looped a header into the far post having been found by Michael Kightly's floated free kick.

Nyonnais almost reduced the deficit back to one with the opening chance of the first half, but Karim Chentouf was narrowly off target having created space for himself to shoot.

Burnley did have the ball in the back of the net for a fourth time with just over 20 minutes remaining, but Lukas Jutkiewicz's celebrations were cut short when the referee chalked off his far-post header.

Jutkiewicz was inches away from getting his name on the scoresheet legally as the match entered its closing stages, but his acrobatic overhead kick from Scott Arfield's cross cannoned back off the bar.

In the end Burnley were forced to settle for a two-goal winning margin as they got their pre-season schedule off to a victorious start ahead of Tuesday's match against Morecambe.
