Legendary Brazilian goalkeeper Felix Mieli Venerando, commonly known as Felix, has died at the age of 74.

Felix played in every game of Brazil's victorious 1970 World Cup campaign in a team many consider to be the greatest ever assembled.

The former Fluminense keeper, who won five Rio de Janeiro State championships with the club, died from complications caused by pulmonary emphysema in Sao Paulo earlier today.

"The supporters should be eternally grateful for the contribution Felix gave to the national team," Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Jose Maria Marin said in a statement.

"He is an idol and will be greatly missed."

There will be a minute's silence at all Brazilian championship games this weekend to honour the keeper, who won 47 caps for the national side.
