Marc Wilmots fielded a strong side in Liege tonight as many of Belgium's World Cup squad started in the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium.

It did not take long for the Belgians to edge ahead, as Napoli winger Dries Mertens fired his nation into an 18th-minute lead.

Australia struggled in their bid to draw level and Wilmots's troops all but ended the contest on 77 minutes through Axel Witsel.

The Rode Duivels, who will face Wales in Euro 2016 qualifying, kick off their campaign by hosting Andorra in Brussels next month.
