Juventus reach Champions League last 16 with draw against Atletico Madrid

Juventus reach the knockout stages of the Champions League with a goalless draw against Atletico Madrid.

Juventus have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League by holding Group A winners Atletico Madrid to a goalless draw at home.

Both sides started the match frenetically, but it was the Spaniards who carved out the first clear-cut chance, Koke testing Gianluigi Buffon with a low strike from inside the box in the eighth minute.

Juve applied some pressure of their own one minute later as Paul Pogba swung in a dangerous ball to the near post, Miguel Moya in the Atletico goal doing just enough to beat the cross clear under pressure from Fernando Llorente.

The first period was evenly matched, but Group A leaders Atletico would have taken a slender lead into the break had Buffon not been on hand to keep out a strike by Mario Suarez on the stroke of half time.

Juventus almost racked up the goal they craved in the 64th minute when Pogba unleashed a blistering strike from outside the box, stinging the palms of the outstretching Moya.

With Olympiacos defeating Malmo in Group A's other fixture, conceding would have been devastating for Juve, but Atletico rarely got out of second gear after the break and created little beyond half-chances.

The Italians became equally lax as the half wore on and looked content to hold out for the draw they needed to book their place in the next phase, rather than attempt to force the issue.

The result sees both sides head into the knockout phase of the competition, Atletico as group winners and Juve in second place, just one point better off than hapless Olympiacos.
