David Bernstein, Lord Mervyn King resign from Aston Villa board

David Bernstein and Mervyn King reportedly resign from the board at Aston Villa following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

David Bernstein and Lord Mervyn King have resigned from the board at Aston Villa.

The news comes two days after the Midlands outfit were officially relegated to the Championship following a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

King joined the board of the ailing club in February, while Bernstein was appointed to the setup last month as part of a structural change.

According to The Telegraph, both offered their resignations this afternoon, citing difficulty in communication between the board and owner Randy Lerner.

American businessman Lerner, who resides permanently in the United States, put the club up for sale in 2014 but is yet to strike a deal with a potential buyer.

There have been developments on that front, though, as chairman Steve Hollis is in "engaged in extensive negotiations" to sell the club.

Villa are still hunting for a new manager following the departure of Remi Garde last month.

A statement from the Midlands club read: "It is with regret that Aston Villa Football Club today announces the resignations of Mervyn King and David Bernstein as directors of the club.

"The club would like to thank both for all their efforts throughout their short time as members of the board. A search to appoint a new manager remains a priority.

"Brian Little will continue to advise the chairman on all football related matters."

Villa have won just three of their 34 league games this season.
