Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is pleased with the development of right-back Carl Jenkinson and is confident that he will be ready to play for England soon.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has backed defender Carl Jenkinson to play for England before long.

Three Lions coach Roy Hodgson confirmed this week that the 20-year-old right-back has pledged his allegiance to the 1966 World Cup winners despite representing Finland at Under-19 and Under-21 levels.

"I think it's a bit early, but I am sure he will be there," said Wenger on Arsenal's official website.

"He has developed extremely well. In his head, I like the way he sees things - first to establish yourself completely as a player in your club. Once you're completely established, go for internationals.

"But you cannot always decide that when you're a young player. Everybody who is 20 would love to be called by England."

Jenkinson joined Arsenal from Charlton Athletic in June 2011.
