Referee Andre Marriner has "expressed his disappointment" at sending off the wrong player in today's Premier League clash between Chelsea and Arsenal.
Marriner awarded Chelsea a penalty with 15 minutes on the clock following a deliberate handball by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain which denied the Blues a goal, but instead showed a red card to Kieran Gibbs.
Oxlade-Chamberlain appeared to tell the official that he was the offender, but the decision stood.
"Incidents of mistaken identity are very rare and are often the result of a number of different technical factors," a statement released by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited read.
"Whilst this was a difficult decision, Andre is disappointed that he failed to identify the correct player. He expressed his disappointment to Arsenal when he was made aware of the issue."
Chelsea went on to win the match 6-0 at Stamford Bridge.
