Joey Barton: 'Danny Welbeck is a better team player than Daniel Sturridge'

Joey Barton believes that Danny Welbeck is a better team player than Daniel Sturridge in the England fold.

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton believes that Danny Welbeck should be picked ahead of Daniel Sturridge in the England starting lineup from now on.

The new Arsenal forward was selected by Roy Hodgson to face Switzerland in Basel last night after Sturridge was ruled out of the match with an injury.

Welbeck impressed during his stint on the pitch by scoring both goals in England's 2-0 victory over the Swiss in their first Euro 2016 qualifier.

Barton gave his views on the two strikers by tweeting: "Prefer Welbeck to Sturridge. Although DS is a far talented individual. DW is much better team player.

"DW should start. Run the legs off himself. DS off the bench when fit. Better chance of his individualism working when opp players tire.

"I think Sturridge is a great individual player but until he gives more to the team collective his role should be as an impact player."

Meanwhile, it is believed that Liverpool are hopeful Sturridge's injury will not keep him on the sidelines for too long, despite reports claiming that the forward could be out of action for four months.
