Half-Time Report: Davy Klaassen brace gives Ajax lead

Two first-half goals from Davy Klaassen put Ajax 2-0 up at half time in their Champions League qualifier against Rapid Vienna.

Two first-half goals from Davy Klaassen have given Ajax a 2-0 lead over Rapid Vienna at half time in the first leg of their Champions League qualification tie.

Chances were scarce in the opening 20 minutes, but Florian Kainz could have opened the scoring for the home side when Steffen Hofmann picked him out with a through-ball. However, Jasper Cillessen made a save at full stretch to keep it out.

The Dutch side took the lead soon after as Daley Sinkgraven curled the ball into the box, leaving the unmarked Klaassen to strike the ball on the turn, picking out the bottom right corner.

Anwar El-Ghazi could have doubled the advantage just moments later as Sinkgraven provided another cross, but his finish was just wide of the left upright.

El-Ghazi tried to set up new signing Nemanja Gudelj for his first Champions League goal, but the midfielder was also unable to test the Vienna goalkeeper.

Ajax continued to look the more likely as half time approached as Mitchell Dijks set up Sinkgraven, but he sliced his finish narrowly wide.

The visitors were not done though, launching another attack with just a couple of minutes to play before the interval, resulting in a lofted cross from Arkadiusz Milik connecting with Klaassen, who controlled the ball before hammering in his second of the night.
