Flanker Blair Cowan ready to start for Scotland following call-up

Flanker Blair Cowan, who replaces the injured Grant Gilchrist in the Scotland squad, states that he is ready to start the team's clash with South Africa on Saturday.

Blair Cowan has stated that he is ready to start for Scotland against South Africa after his late call-up to the squad.

Following an injury to lock Grant Gilchrist, Vern Cotter opted to bring Cowan back into the fold after the flanker failed to make the initial 31-man Rugby World Cup squad despite starting all of the country's 2015 Six Nations fixtures.

"The coaches know what I can do. I don't need to prove myself. I just want to come up here and be positive. Even if it's just in training, I'll just bring some energy," Cowan told reporters.

"And if I'm called up to play on Saturday, am I ready? Yes - just show me the jersey."

On his failure to make the initial squad, the New Zealand-born flanker added: "It was devastating. We all knew how close the seven role was. It was probably the tightest position in the whole squad. So to get the call up is sensational. It's every man's dream. It's just a shame it comes on the back of someone hurting themselves."

Scotland, who sit atop Pool B after two fixtures, take on South Africa at St James' Park on Saturday.
