England beat Scotland to retain Calcutta Cup

England beat Scotland to get their Six Nations campaign off to a winning start.

England have ensured that they will keep the Calcutta Cup for another year with a comfortable 38-18 win over Scotland in the Six Nations.

It was Scotland who had the better start of the two sides, Sean Maitland scoring a try on his international debut.

However, some solid kicking from Owen Farrell allowed England to edge ahead, before Chris Ashton crossed the try line for the hosts, helping England to a 19-11 lead at the break.

Last year's Six Nations runners-up came out strong in the second half, Billy Twelvetrees adding a try on his first appearance for England less than two minutes after the restart.

Geoff Parling helped extend the home side's lead to 20 points, allowing Stuart Lancaster to take a number of his starters off early.

A try from Stuart Hogg with 10 minutes left to play lifted Scotland, but England held firm, and Danny Care added a fourth try for the hosts with the final action of the match.
