USA defeat Germany in Washington

USA defeat Germany 4-3 at the RFK Stadium in Washington.

USA have registered an impressive 4-3 victory over Germany in Washington DC.

It was an action-packed match played at a frantic pace, which wowed the 45,000 fans at the RFK Stadium.

The hosts had an early chance to take the lead when Jozy Altidore got on the end of a long ball, but Per Mertesacker managed to get across to make the block.

However, the former Hull City striker did manage to break the deadlock in the 13th minute, hitting a stunning volley past a helpless Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Disaster then struck for the young goalkeeper just three minutes later as he misjudged Benedikt Howedes's back pass, allowing the ball to bobble past him and into the net.

Miroslav Klose, who is one goal behind Gerd Muller's scoring record for Die Mannschaft, thought that he had equalled the legend's tally in the 24th minute, only to be denied by the linesman's flag.

The score stayed the same until half time, but the Germans got themselves back into it after the restart, with Heiko Westermann heading in from a corner.

Good work from Altidore allowed Clint Dempsey to smash home from inside the box, restoring USA's two-goal cushion on the hour mark.

Jurgen Klinsmann's men were in dreamland four minutes later, as the Tottenham Hotspur attacker grabbed his second of the game after weaving his way past Lukas Podolski and curling beyond Ter Stegen.

Just as the game looked to be slipping away, Max Kruse blasted past Tim Howard to reduce the deficit in the 79th minute.

Julian Draxler then followed in Sidney Sam's effort, which had been repelled by the Everton keeper, to set up a nervy final 10 minutes for the hosts.

Despite late pressure, Klinsmann's side held on for the victory, which will boost their confidence ahead of a round of World Cup qualifiers in the CONCACAF region.
