Swansea have announced the appointment of Steve Cooper as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

The 39-year-old Welshman succeeds Graham Potter, who left the Liberty Stadium to take charge at Premier League Brighton last month.

Cooper, who is joined at the Swans by Mike Marsh, led an England Under-17 side – which included Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho – to World Cup glory in 2017.

Swansea chairman Trevor Birch said: "We are excited and delighted with the appointment.

"Together with Leon (Britton) and Alan (Curtis) we went through a long and thorough interview process covering a lot of very good candidates.

"The quality was extremely high, which speaks volumes about the attractiveness of the opportunity and how well respected this football club is within the game.

"At the forefront of our thinking was the appointment of a head coach who was hungry, ambitious, had a clear track record of playing our style of football, plus a pedigree to work with and develop young, talented players.

"Steve matched all those requirements in abundance and his views, coaching ethos and presentation were extremely compelling."

Cooper started his coaching career at Wrexham before moving to Liverpool's academy in 2008 where he worked with Raheem Sterling, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Woodburn.

He joined the Football Association as a youth coach educator in 2013 and landed the role of Under-16 coach in 2014.

Cooper was made Under-17 coach in 2015, leading the side to glory in India two years later.
