The Perth outfit, who were appearing in their first ever final, came close to a spectacular opener just before the quarter-hour mark when James Dunne's volley from 25 yards was tipped over by Radoslaw Cierzniak.

Dundee then went even closer when they worked the ball well out to Andrew Robertson, whose low cross was guided against the inside of the post by Ryan Dow.

St Johnstone took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Cierzniak flapped at a corner, allowing Anderson to head into an unguarded net at the back post.

Dundee struck the woodwork for a second time five minutes into the second half when Nadir Ciftci's free kick came back off the underside of the crossbar and somehow stayed out.

Minutes later St Johnstone thought they had doubled their lead but Stevie May's close-range effort was rightly chalked out for handball.

United had plenty of chances to equalise but were then struck by a killer blow in the 84th minute when MacLean took advantage of a lucky deflection to stab home under the body of Cerzniak.

Despite more late pressure from Dundee, St Johnstone held firm to keep a clean sheet and claim a first major trophy in their 130-year history.
