Tottenham Hotspur ease past Newcastle United

Tottenham Hotspur make light work of Newcastle United to cruise into the semi-finals of the League Cup following a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham Hotspur have eased to a 4-0 victory over Newcastle United to book their spot in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Following a frantic start to the match, Nacer Chadli had the first attempt for the hosts when he drilled a low shot straight at Jak Alnwick.

The Magpies had not posed too much of a threat until Moussa Sissoko burst through the midfield, before firing in a stinging drive that Michel Vorm had to beat away.

Spurs soon made their early dominance pay by taking the lead, as Nabil Bentaleb hooked the ball home after Alnwick had spilled a corner.

Harry Kane almost doubled his side's lead with a powerful strike from range, but his low effort skidded inches wide of the post.

With two minutes remaining in the first half Newcastle fashioned their best chance of the evening, but Yoan Gouffran fired high and wide from just inside the box.

There were to be no more goals in the first half, but just 30 seconds after the interval Spurs found the net for the second time.

Christian Eriksen did well to pick out Chadli, and the Belgian cut in from the left before drilling a low strike into the bottom corner.

Emmanuel Riviere should have pulled a goal back for Newcastle soon after, but he diverted Ayoze Perez's cross wide of the far post.

Despite that chance, the hosts still looked the more likely to score the next goal and they were denied a third when Jan Vertonghen's header was cleared off the line by Massadio Haidara.

Spurs continued to press and in the 63rd minute they did find the net once more, as Kane latched on to a loose ball inside the box before firing into the bottom corner.

It got even worse for Newcastle seven minutes later, as Eriksen's drive was parried by the keeper and Roberto Soldado slotted in the rebound for his side's fourth of the evening.

That proved to be the final goal, as the Magpies left North London having fallen to a second comprehensive defeat in a matter of days.
