South Korea to revive football exchanges with North

Chung Mong-gyu will discuss reviving inter-Korean football exchanges with North Korea during his visit to Pyongyang later this month.

The Korean Football Association has said that they will discuss reviving inter-Korean football exchanges with North Korea during president Chung Mong-gyu's visit to Pyongyang later this month.

Chung will visit the North's capital from September 18-20 for a meeting of the executive committee of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF).

According to the KFA, the focus of his trip would initially be on women's football.

"We expect this trip will go a long way toward revitalising inter-Korean football exchanges," a KFA official is quoted as saying by the New York Times.

"Given North Korea's prowess in women's football, it will help our women's team to play them.

"There will also be discussions on holding matches between our women's youth teams."

Teams of both genders have faced each other during different tournaments and in qualifying campaigns, but the last friendly between the two nations took place in 2005 to commemorate the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan.
