Chesterfield might have had a penalty after four minutes when Shaun Brisley appeared to come through the back of Eoin Doyle inside the box, but referee Andy D'Urso was not interested.

The Posh took the lead just two minutes later, however, when Josh McQuoid tucked home from close range after Tommy Lee had spilled a header from Michael Bostwick.

Darren Ferguson's side had another half-chance after 22 minutes when Tommy Rowe delivered a low cross towards Joe Newell at the front post, but Lee was on hand to make a smart save.

Chesterfield's best chance of the first period arrived on 32 minutes when Sam Morsy found some space on the edge of the box, but his effort was wide of the post.

Peterborough had their second five minutes before the interval, however, when Brisley produced a towering header from a corner.

The first chance of the second half fell to Britt Assombalonga in the 49th minute, but his effort was wide of the post from close range.

Chesterfield cut the deficit to 2-1 after 53 minutes, however, when Doyle finished from close range following smart work from Morsy.

Grant McCann came close for Peterborough on 64 minutes with a powerful free kick, but his effort was saved by Lee.

Ferguson's side were reduced to 10 men less than three minutes later when Newell was handed a straight red card for lashing out on Morsy.

Peterborough had a penalty after 77 minutes, however, when Liam Cooper felled Mark Little inside the box. Assombalonga stepped forward and made no mistake in sending his side 3-1 ahead with his 28th goal of the season.

Chesterfield pushed for a response in the latter stages, but could not turn the tie around as Peterborough picked up the trophy in London.
