Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren: 'We need to build on Liverpool win'

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren insists that his side have to take the momentum from their win over Liverpool into their next match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has called on his players to build on their winning display over Liverpool in the club's match against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies ended a run of back-to-back defeats in the Premier League by defeating the Reds 2-0 at St James' Park through an own goal from Martin Skrtel and a late strike from Georginio Wijnaldum.

McClaren has insisted that his side have to continue to put in the same quality of displays throughout the rest of the campaign to avoid relegation from the top flight.

He told the club's official website: "We need to follow up at White Hart Lane. We need to put in a performance if we are to get anything. We have been reiterating what we did against Liverpool and what we need to do to give a good performance against Spurs.

"We had a terrible run of two games, so its important we get back to where we were at before the international break. The players were on form and the crowd were on form - we need to follow that up at Spurs.

"One of the key ingredients is that you have to out-run your opponent and put the effort in. It's no coincidence that when you do that, the crowd get behind you and you get results."

Newcastle are 18th in the Premier League ahead of their trip to White Hart Lane.
