Newcastle United striker Sammy Ameobi says sorry to fans who travelled to Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Southampton.

Newcastle United striker Sammy Ameobi has apologised to fans who travelled to Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Southampton.

The Magpies are now without a win in four Premier League games after goals from Adam Lallana and Gaston Ramirez gave the home side the three points at St Mary's.

"We can't apologise enough," Ameobi told the club's official website. "It was an unacceptable display and if I had travelled all the way down to watch that I would be devastated.

"Everyone is so disappointed. We weren't good enough and that is hard to take."

Newcastle have the chance to get back to winning ways on Wednesday when they travel to Stoke City.
