Sergio Reguilon is set to return to Tottenham Hotspur after Manchester United opted to cut his loan move short.

The 27-year-old joined the Red Devils on a season-long loan move in September following injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Man United had initially picked out Chelsea's Marc Cucurella as their top left-back target, before an appearance in the EFL Cup complicated a potential loan switch.

As a result, the 20-time English champions turned their focus to agreeing a temporary deal with Tottenham for Reguilon.

However, as per The Athletic, Reguilon is now set to return to North London after Man United triggered a break clause in his loan agreement.

Reguilon has ultimately been deemed surplus to requirements, with Shaw available and Malacia closing in on a return from injury.

Man United have also taken into account that they will have a lighter schedule in the second half of the season following their elimination from the Champions League and EFL Cup.

The full-back will leave Old Trafford after featuring in 12 games across all competitions, including his most recent appearance as a late substitute in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Reguilon is likely to leave Spurs again before the current transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

Reguilon is keen to gain regular playing time, which is something he is not expected to be given under Ange Postecoglou.

The Tottenham boss has utilised Destiny Udogie as his main left-back this season, while the likes of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies can also operate in that position if required.

Reguilon has been linked with German side Borussia Dortmund as well as other clubs from the Premier League.

Dortmund are seemingly determined to bring in a new left-sided defender, having also been mooted as a potential destination for Chelsea's Ian Maatsen.
