Christian Eriksen says that Manchester United were in the mix for his signature before he left Tottenham Hotspur for Inter Milan.

Christian Eriksen has revealed that Manchester United were in the running for his signature when it became clear that he would be leaving Tottenham Hotspur.

The Denmark international completed a move to Inter Milan on January 28, with the Italian giants paying close to £17m to secure a deal during the winter transfer window.

United were continually linked with the 27-year-old in the first half of the 2019-20 campaign, but Eriksen has claimed that a desire to seek "a new challenge" abroad led to him leaving for Serie A.

"For a few years but it was never really likely. We did speak to them of course and we did hear what was possible and what wasn't possible. But, in the end, me personally, I wanted a new challenge. To stay in the Premier League would have been an easy solution," Eriksen told BBC Sport.

"Of course, staying at Tottenham would also have been a solution but, for me, it just came down to wanting to try a new challenge in a new country. Once Inter came up it really wasn't a difficult choice."

Eriksen, who was due to see his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expire this summer, made his Serie A debut for Antonio Conte's side against Udinese last weekend.
