Liverpool assistant boss Colin Pascoe backs Emre Can for future captaincy

Liverpool assistant boss Colin Pascoe believes that "fantastic" Emre Can will develop into a future captain.

Liverpool assistant manager Colin Pascoe believes that Emre Can has all the qualities to develop into a future captain.

The 21-year-old, who signed for the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, has impressed playing in a defensive role for manager Brendan Rodgers in recent games.

While the German Under-21 international has shown his qualities alongside Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho, Pascoe has claimed that Can would prefer to play in midfield.

"When we monitored him to go in at Liverpool he could play at centre-back, but when he's had the opportunity to play there he's been fantastic," Pascoe told reporters.

"When he came into midfield the other day, he was fantastic again. He's worked hard and waited for his chance and grabbed it with both hands. Midfield is his position, he wants to play there, but will play anywhere.

"He's young and learning his game, but yeah, in years to come I'm sure he'll progress to be [a captain], he's been fantastic."

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last nine Premier League games.
