Liverpool legend: 'Christian Benteke must score 20 Premier League goals'

Christian Benteke has no excuse for failing to reach the 20-goal barrier in the Premier League if he joins Liverpool, says ex-Red Steve McMahon.

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon has told Christian Benteke that he must reach the 20-goal barrier in the Premier League to justify his hefty price tag.

Speculation is rife that the Belgian striker, 24, will undergo a medical with the Reds this morning ahead of a £32.5m switch from Aston Villa.

"He has got to get 20 league goals, especially with Liverpool's main striker Daniel Sturridge out until September at least," he told ESPN.

"It's no use getting lots of goals in other competitions and only eight or 10 in the league. He must be a consistent scorer in the Premier League."

Benteke has netted 42 league goals since arriving in England three years ago. The Reds have also signed Danny Ings and Roberto Firmino this summer.
