Mircea Lucescu believes that Shakhtar Donetsk's 2-1 home win against Chelsea on Tuesday is one of their best games in recent times.

Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu has hailed his side's performance against Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday as one of their best in recent times.

The Ukrainian giants defeated the defending European champions 2-1 at home, thanks to goals from Alex Teixeira and Fernandinho.

"The match panned out exactly as we would have hoped," said Lucescu. "Perhaps it was one of our best games in recent times.

"It proves we are on the right track, we are still growing, our young players are maturing and gaining the necessary confidence.

"I have to say that this Chelsea side are stronger than the one that won the UEFA Champions League last season. That's makes our victory is even more important. I believe we could've won by even more, but Petr Cech was really good in goal."

Shakhtar are currently at the top of Group E with seven points from three matches.
