Burnley seal a slender 1-0 victory over Newcastle United to move up to seventh in the Premier League, while the Magpies sit ninth.

Burnley bounced back from their recent defeat to Manchester City by sealing a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at Turf Moor on Monday evening.

Jeff Hendrick eventually broke the deadlock in the second half to move the Clarets up to seventh in the Premier League table on Sean Dyche's five-year anniversary at the club.

The result ended a three-game unbeaten run in the top flight for Newcastle, who have now lost four of their 10 matches since returning to the division.

The hosts attempted to set the tone for the match, with Hendrick unleashing an early shot from an angle, but it did little to trouble Rob Elliot as the ball flew wide of the far post.

Ashley Barnes looked as though he was going to be a handful for Newcastle when he darted into space in an attempt to get on the end of Jack Cork's cross.

Fortunately for Newcastle, the move came to nothing, but the game itself lacked action in the final third as the clock ticked down in the opening 45 minutes.

The Magpies created a half-chance when Christian Atsu got on the end of a scrappy corner, but when the ball dropped to him, he sent it over the bar.

The visitors began to dominate, but it was a frustrating first half for both teams as Jonjo Shelvey whacked a shot towards goal from the edge of the box, only for it to fall directly into the hands of goalkeeper Nick Pope.

At the other end, Barnes had a direct header from 12 yards out, but as he connected with the ball after it got a nick off DeAndre Yedlin, he could only send it wide.

After the break, Ayoze Perez forced a save from Pope by attempting to curl the ball into the back of the net from outside of the danger area.

Both teams refrained from using their wide players more regularly, instead opting to hit direct shots from the middle, which were all comfortably gathered by the goalkeepers.

The breakthrough was eventually made in the 74th minute when Cork's saved effort bounced back into the path of Johan Gudmundsson, who crossed for Jeff Hendrick at the far post.

The midfielder managed to control the ball before directing it into the roof of the net from close range, but the Clarets could not afford to relax as Newcastle tried to find an equaliser.

Joselu came close with a low effort from the edge of the area after breaking away from his marker, but the ball bobbled wide and after a handful of wasted chances, the Magpies were forced to accept defeat.
