Novak Djokovic outlasts Stanislas Wawrinka in five-set battle

Novak Djokovic defeats Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2 (4)6-7 3-6 6-3 6-4 to reach the final of the US Open.

Novak Djokovic has prevailed over Stanislas Wawrinka in another five-set epic, this time in the semi-finals of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

The pair were involved in arguably the best match of this year's Australian Open in Melbourne, where the Serb emerged triumphant in the fourth round.

After four hours and nine minutes on Arthur Ashe, it was the world number one celebrating, having been pushed to his limit once more by the Swiss number two.

Djokovic was left reeling after Wawrinka dominated the first set 6-2 in just 34 minutes, but a tight second went to a tie-breaker, which the 2011 champion took 7-4.

Wawrinka roared back once again to take the third set 6-3 to get Djokovic on the ropes, but the Serb got an early break in the fourth to put the pressure back on his opponent.

That took its toll on Wawrinka, who smashed up his racquet in frustration, forcing the umpire to issue him with a point deduction.

After serving out the set 6-3, Djokovic took the match into a decider, which he won 6-4 to advance to his fourth consecutive US Open final and fifth in total.
