Serena Williams concedes that the "windy conditions" made her US Open match against Coco Vandeweghe difficult.

Serena Williams has admitted that the "windy conditions" had a major influence on her first match of the US Open against Coco Vandeweghe last night.

Williams took just 55 minutes to defeat her fellow American 7-5 6-3 in New York.

However, the 14-time Grand Slam champion has admitted that the adverse weather made the match harder than it looks on paper.

"It was blowing a lot at the Olympics. I think this may have been more than the Olympics," she told reporters.

"I usually gauge the wind by my hair. If it's really going forward I'm thinking it's really windy. The match was so weird, the conditions were so tough. I couldn't really play my game. She couldn't really play her game."

Williams has won the singles title three times at Flushing Meadows.
