Janko Tipsarevic has eased into the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open after defeating Frederico Gil in two straight sets.
The Serbian fifth seed sailed through the first set, clinching it 6-2 with his Portuguese opponent failing to impose his game on the clay-court match.
Gil tried to force an impact in the second and almost snatched a break of serve but the world number eight fought off his advances.
The Portuguese professional struggled to hold on to his serve, which allowed his 27-year-old competitor to execute a number of powerful shots to take advantage and win the set 6-2.
Tipsarevic will face either Rafael Nadal or Robert Farah in the next stage of the competition.
