Poland's Jerzy Janowicz booked his place in round two of the Madrid Masters courtesy of a 6-3 6-4 victory over Sam Querrey this evening.
From the very first opening game, world number 24 Janowicz produced a string of powerful forehand strokes that American Querrey found difficult to return.
He was then eventually broken as Janowicz went on to claim the first set thanks to one break of serve.
It was a similar outcome in the second set and although Querrey saved one match point while serving at 5-4 down, he was unable to prevent Janowicz from serving out to win the encounter.
He will now take on Tomas Berdych for a place in round three.
