Dan Evans misses out on place in Vancouver Challenger final

Dan Evans fails to win a place in the final of the Vancouver Challenger as he loses in three sets to Australia's John Patrick-Smith.

Dan Evans has suffered a three-set defeat to John Patrick-Smith in the semi-finals of the Vancouver Challenger.

The former British number two lost out 4-6 6-2 6-3 to the world number 136 as his remarkable run in Canada came to an end.

After coming through three qualifying rounds, Evans had defeated Radek Stepanek, Taro Daniel and Brydan Klein to reach the last four, and after he went a set and a break ahead of Patrick-Smith, he looked to have one foot in the final.

However, Evans lost six games in a row to drop the second, and despite improving in the decider, one break of serve was enough for Patrick-Smith to move through to play Dudi Sela in Sunday's showpiece.

It has been a terrific week for Evans, though, who could move as many as 72 places up the ATP world rankings into 345th position as he looks for an eventual return to the world's top 200.
