Juan Martin del Potro comes from behind to beat Richard Gasquet

Juan Martin del Potro wins his ATP World Tour Finals opener, beating Richard Gasquet (4)6-7 6-3 7-5 in a hard-fought match.

Juan Martin del Potro has come from a set down to beat Richard Gasquet (4)6-7 6-3 7-5 in the opening ATP World Tour Finals Group B match.

Both players had little trouble on their own serve during the opening exchanges, but it was Gasquet who made the first breakthrough against the big-hitting Argentine, taking advantage of two break points to gain control of the set.

Del Potro hit straight back, however, breaking Gasquet in the very next game to restore parity. Both men then held serve to force a tie-break, which Gasquet eventually won 7-4 after some impressive shots from the duo.

The Argentine responded in the second set, picking up the crucial break in the fourth game and holding serve throughout to claim it 6-3.

Del Potro also made the first move in the decider, breaking Gasquet in the seventh game to take control of the set.

The Frenchman fought back with Del Potro serving for the match, however, breaking the world number five with a love game to draw back level at 5-5 in the third set.

Del Potro responded immediately, though, breaking Gasquet again to set up another chance to serve for the match, and this time he made no mistake to seal a 7-5 victory in the final set.
