Exeter have given their Amlin Challenge Cup Pool Four hopes a boost with a 23-19 at Newport Gwent Dragons.

The score was 6-6 after 20 minutes when Newport's Jason Tovey and Exeter's Ignacio Mieres exchanged penalties.

Another Tovey penalty put the Dragons in front before Toby Falatau's try, converted by Tovey, gave the hosts a 16-6 lead at the break.

Simon Alcott's try, combined with Gareth Steenson's extras, saw the visitors edge ever closer five minutes into the second half.

Tovey's penalty gave Newport some breathing space, but Steenson's penalty just before the hour kept the pressure on the hosts.

The Chiefs got the all-important score with five minutes to play when James Phillips touched down after being camped on Newport's try line. Steenson was on hand to kick the conversion and secure the win.

The win has put the English club second behind Perpignan in Pool Four, while Newport slip to third.
