Roberto Martinez claims that he is not "too nice" to be a successful Premier League manager.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that he is not "too nice" to be a manager in the Premier League.

The Latics will go in search of their first win in seven league games against Wolves this afternoon. However, Martinez has said that he will not change his methods, despite the fact that the club remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

"I don't think I'm too nice at all," he said. "It is important to be respectful - but I also want my players to be ruthless with their careers and winning football games.

"I will be very nice if you keep your standards high, but in football it is not just about being nice, it is recognising when you have to act and demand high standards. Behind the scenes, you don't last in management if you cannot be demanding.

"I don't manage by punishing people or blaming culture, I manage by aspiration. I want the players to be as good as they can be and demand it from each other. Football is about players enjoying their football and combining as a team."

Martinez has led his side to just one win in ten league games so far this season.
