League Cup roundup: Multiple giant-killings as Wigan Athletic, Ipswich Town bow out

Wigan Athletic, Ipswich Town, Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic are just some of the big sides to be defeated in the first round of the League Cup.

Wigan Athletic, Ipswich Town, Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic were just some of the sides on the receiving end of giant-killings in the first round of the League Cup.

Latics defender Jake Buxton saw red at Boundary Park as goals from Ryan Flynn and Josh Law gave Oldham Athletic a 2-1 win, while Ipswich fell to a solitary Ben Kennedy strike as Stevenage clinched a 1-0 win at Portman Road.

Fallen giants Charlton suffered a 1-0 loss at Cheltenham Town, courtesy of a first-half Harry Pell strike, while Bolton succumbed to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Blackpool at the Macron Stadium.

Other sides that suffered shock first-round exits on Tuesday night include Rotherham United, victims of a 5-4 loss to Morecambe, and Sheffield Wednesday, undone 2-1 by Cambridge United.

Teams that successfully negotiated opponents beneath them in the pyramid include Fulham, who withstood a late Paul McCallum-inspired fightback to beat Leyton Orient 3-2; Blackburn Rovers, comfortable 3-1 winners at Mansfield Town; and Nottingham Forest, who were helped out by an injury-time Jamie Ward strike to defeat Doncaster Rovers 2-1 at the Keepmoat Stadium.
