Preview: Vitoria de Guimaraes vs. Vizela - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Primeira Liga clash between Vitoria de Guimaraes and Vizela, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Vitoria de Guimaraes will look to maintain their 100% start to the Primeira Liga season when they play host to Vizela on Sunday.

The visitors, meanwhile, are hoping to claim their first win of the campaign after picking up a point from their opening two matches.

After their European dreams were ended by Celje in the second qualifying round of the Europa Conference League, Guimaraes have experienced a tumultuous start to their league campaign despite picking up maximum points.

Their domestic season got off and running with a narrow away win over newly-promoted Estrela, which proved to be Moreno's final game in charge.

The 42-year-old decided to resign from his post, ensuring that Guimaraes went into last weekend's home game against Gil Vicente without a permanent manager.

Uncertainty over the club's managerial position did not prove to be a problem, as Guimaraes came from behind to win 2-1 thanks to goals from Tiago Silva and Nelson da Luz.

Paulo Turra, who recently left Brazilian club Santos, was appointed as Guimaraes manager earlier this week, and the new boss will be determined to continue the club's impressive start to the Primeira Liga season.

Meanwhile, Vizela are competing in their third consecutive top-flight campaign after achieving a commendable 11th-placed finish last term.

They looked set to get off to a positive start when they fought from two goals down in their opening game against Sporting Lisbon, but a 99th-minute winner from Paulinho left Pablo Villar's side with nothing to show for their extraordinary efforts.

After suffering disappointment in their away meeting with Sporting, Vizela experienced the joy of a late goal in their home fixture against Arouca last weekend, with Samuel Essende netting an 88th-minute equaliser to ensure that the contest ended in a 2-2 draw.

While Vizela would have been pleased to snatch a point, the result extended their current winless run to nine league matches.

Having conceded five goals in their opening two matches, Sunday's visitors will be aware that they need to improve defensively if they are to claim their first league win since April 7.

Team News

Guimaraes are likely to be without the services of summer additions Ricardo Mangas and Telmo Arcanjo due to injury issues.

After starting the last two matches, Manu is expected to retain his place in the back three alongside Jorge Fernandes and Mikel Villanueva.

Luz could be rewarded with a starting berth after coming off the bench to score a late winner against Gil Vicente last weekend.

As for the visitors, they will be forced into at least one change, with Tomas Silva suspended following his red card against Arouca.

In Silva's absence, Hugo Oliveira is expected to be given the chance to start in a back four with Bruno Wilson, Anderson and Matheus Pereira.

Having found the net in both of Vizela's opening two games, Essende will be looking to continue his impressive start to the season when he leads the line.

Vitoria de Guimaraes possible starting lineup:
Varela; Fernandes, Manu, Villanueva; Gaspar, T. Silva, D. Silva, Handel, Luz; A. Silva, J.Silva

Vizela possible starting lineup:
Buntic; Oliveira, Wilson, Anderson, Pereira; Bustamnate, Lacava; Bondoso, Samu, Moreira; Essende

We say: Vitoria de Guimaraes 2-1 Vizela

Guimaraes have contended with managerial uncertainty to win their opening two league games, and with a new head coach now in place, we think that they will maintain their 100% start to the season by claiming a narrow win over Vizela.
