Francesco Guidolin: 'I wanted Watford job'

New Swansea City head coach Francesco Guidolin admits that he was keen to land the Watford job before he arrived at the Liberty Stadium.

New Swansea City head coach Francesco Guidolin has admitted that he wanted to manage Watford.

The 60-year-old was appointed as Garry Monk's successor at the Liberty Stadium on Monday, and just hours later watched from the stands as his new side beat the Hornets 1-0 courtesy of an Ashley Williams header.

However, he revealed that things could have been different had he landed the Watford job while they were going through managerial upheaval on their way to the Premier League last season.

"I think I did some great work at Udinese. I let them know I would have liked to work at Watford, even in the Championship, but other managers were hired," Guidolin told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Given their results, which include promotion and their good form in the Premier League, they made the right decision. I preferred to wait as I wanted to experience something outside of Italy, and in the end I was rewarded.

"I knew it wouldn't be easy as I'm not well-known internationally, but my agent Frank Trimboli did a great job in getting me this opportunity with Swansea."

Guidolin has already added former Chelsea midfielder Gabriele Ambrosetti to his coaching staff ahead of his first match in charge of the club, which comes away to Everton on Sunday.
