Sunderland have reportedly ended their pursuit of Nicolas Lombaerts after the defender failed a medical with the club.
It is thought that the Black Cats agreed a £5m fee with Zenit St Petersburg for the Belgian international, while the player agreed personal terms at the Stadium of Light.
However, the move has fallen through due to an issue with Lombaerts's medical which took place on Tuesday, according to the Sunderland Echo.
The 30-year-old has been with Zenit since 2007, making 240 appearances for the Russian side.
Lombaerts, who has three years remaining on his current deal, has made 33 appearances for Belgium.
