Sunderland could reportedly have to make do without the services of Jermain Defoe for this weekend's clash against West Bromwich Albion.
The striker, who joined the Black Cats from Toronto during the winter transfer window, did not feature in the FA Cup tie at Bradford City on Sunday, with speculation having suggested that he had been rested by manager Gus Poyet.
However, after the 2-0 defeat, Poyet revealed to reporters that the former England international had picked up a calf injury.
"Jermain had a problem with his calf and didn't train properly on Friday," said the Uruguayan.
Now, according to Chronicle Live, Defoe is facing a race against time to prove his fitness for the upcoming clash at the Stadium of Light.
The 32-year-old is expected to return to training on either Thursday or Friday, when he will be fully assessed by the club's medical staff.
