Benoit Assou-Ekotto released by Tottenham Hotspur

Benoit Assou-Ekotto is released by Tottenham Hotspur after spending nine years at the North London club.

Tottenham Hotspur have released Cameroonian left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto following a nine-year spell at White Hart Lane.

The 30-year-old joined Spurs from Lens in 2006 and made 155 appearances for the club.

However, he has found first-team opportunities hard to come by in recent seasons. The defender was on loan at Queens Park Rangers last season and has not featured under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.

A statement on the club's official website read: "We wish Benoit well for the future."

Assou-Ekotto's last Spurs appearance came in a 1-0 victory over Sunderland on the final day of the 2012-13 Premier League campaign.
