Sporting Lisbon give their Champions League hopes a boost with Schalke 04 win

Sporting Lisbon beat Schalke 4-2 in the Champions League to give their hopes of qualification to the last 16 a shot in the arm.

Sporting Lisbon gave their Champions League hopes a shot in the arm with a 4-2 win over Schalke 04 this evening.

The win moves the Portuguese side up to four points in Group G after they came back from a goal down at home to the Bundesliga side.

The visitors had the lead inside the first 20 minutes and it was Islam Slimani who put through his own net to give the visitors the lead.

However, the Portuguese outfit were back in it nine minutes later thanks to Naby Sarr's header after a delivery from Jefferson.

Jefferson was fortunate not to concede a penalty on 34 minutes as the official waved away Schalke's appeals after the ball appeared to strike him on the hand.

Jefferson gave Sporting the lead less than 10 minutes into the second half when he hammered in a powerful effort after Nani had picked his teammate out on the edge of the box.

The on-loan Manchester United winger then scored one of his own when he tapped in from Andre Carrillo's cross on 73 minutes.

Dennis Aogo reduced the deficit with two minutes of normal time remaining with a half-volley, but the home side restored their two-goal lead in stoppage time through Slimani.
