Roberto di Matteo: Schalke 04 "happy but also sad" following Champions League exit

Schalke 04 manager Roberto di Matteo admits that he is "happy but also sad" after his side beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu but lost on aggregate in the Champions League.

Roberto di Matteo has admitted that his Schalke 04 side is "happy but also sad" after they beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu but were still knocked out of the Champions League.

The Bundesliga side secured a 4-3 win over the European champions in the second leg of the tie, but Real's 2-0 win in the first leg ensured that they progressed to the quarter-finals.

The manager said at his post-match press conference: "We played a great game and we dreamt of going through. We scored four goals against Real Madrid but we are not going through to the next round. We are happy but also sad.

"We had a little bit of bad luck, we hit the post in both games. Ronaldo made the difference in the first leg and also tonight.

"We made things difficult for Madrid. The atmosphere was not easy for them. [Carlo] Ancelotti is still a top, world-class coach."

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored two of the visitors' goals against his former club.
