Shane Long ruled out of Wales qualifier with hip injury

Injured striker Shane Long will play no part for Republic of Ireland in their must-win qualifying clash against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Republic of Ireland have been dealt an injury blow ahead of Monday night's crunch World Cup qualifying clash against Wales as Southampton striker Shane Long has been ruled out through injury.

The 30-year-old is struggling with a hip problem and will play no part at the Cardiff City Stadium in a must-win game for the visitors.

Long played 82 minutes of the 2-0 victory against Moldova last time out and was part of the Ireland contingent that took part in full training on Sunday evening.

A poor run of form in front of goal was likely to see the former West Bromwich Albion man start on the bench in the Welsh capital, with Daryl Murphy favourite to be given the nod after netting a brace in the win over Moldova.

Cork City striker Sean Maguire and Scott Hogan of Aston Villa are also included in Ireland's squad for the Group D clash.
