Lionel Messi's record vs. Real Madrid

Ahead of Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League clash with Real Madrid, Sports Mole takes a closer look at Lionel Messi's record against Los Blancos.

Paris Saint-Germain will aim to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League when they meet Real Madrid in the second leg of their last-16 tie at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

Les Parisiens travel to the Spanish capital boasting a 1-0 lead from the first leg, with Kylian Mbappe scoring a remarkable winner in the 94th minute of the contest.

Lionel Messi has not lost his European pedigree despite struggling for goals in Ligue 1 this term, and the ex-Barcelona man is preparing for another swift reunion with his long-time rivals.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at Messi's record against Real Madrid ahead of the second leg.

Messi has faced Real Madrid more than any other club team during his illustrious career - taking on Los Blancos on 46 occasions across all competitions and directly contributing to 40 goals (26 strikes, 14 assists) in that time.

The Argentine failed to contribute a goal or assist in the first leg of this season's Champions League tie, with his only two other appearances against Los Blancos in the competition coming in the 2010-11 semi-finals as he bagged a brace in the first leg.

It was against Real Madrid that the footballing world first started to pay attention to Messi, who scored all three of Barcelona's goals in a 3-3 El Clasico draw with Real Madrid at the age of just 19 in March 2007.

Messi would end his Barcelona career with a total of 18 goals and nine assists from 29 La Liga clashes with Real Madrid, although he failed to contribute to any of his final five Spanish top-flight Clasico meetings.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner also faced Real Madrid on eight occasions in the Copa del Rey without scoring a single goal, although he has racked up six goals from six Spanish Super Cup clashes with Los Blancos.

Twenty of Messi's 46 clashes with Real Madrid have seen the South American end up on the correct side of the scoreline, with the attacker also involved in 11 draws and 15 defeats against the capital side.

Only against Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao does Messi boast more goals against than Real Madrid, while his 14 assists are only behind 15 against Getafe and a whopping 20 in fixtures with Sevilla and Levante.

However, Messi has also picked up more yellow cards against Real Madrid (14) than any other opponent, and PSG certainly cannot afford to lose their heads if they are to progress after a taxing evening at the Bernabeu.
