Video technology used for first time to award penalty in Club World Cup

Japanese club Kashima Antlers are the first side to benefit from video technology in a FIFA competition, with Viktor Kassai awarding them a pen against Atletico Nacional.

A historic moment in football was marked on Wednesday as Japanese club Kashima Antlers became the first side to benefit from the use of a video replay in a FIFA-recognised competition.

Antlers scored from a penalty awarded to them when referee Viktor Kassai stopped the game after being alerted to an incident inside the box by his assistant.

A look back at the footage on a pitchside monitor led to Kassai pointing to the spot, Shoma Doi converting the penalty to open the scoring for his side in their eventual 3-0 win over Atletico Nacional in the Club World Cup.

Antlers therefore become the first Asian side to progress through to the final of the competition, featuring the champion clubs from each of FIFA's six continents - including Real Madrid, who face Club America in their semi-final on Thursday morning.
