Preview: Newell's Old Boys vs. Atletico Tucuman - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's Argentine Primera Division clash between Newell's Old Boys and Atletico Tucuman, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Atletico Tucuman will be aiming to make it four straight wins in the Argentine Primera Division when they travel to Newell's Old Boys on Monday.

The visitors, who sit 16th in the table, will enter the contest off the back of a 2-0 victory over Gimnasia La Plata, while 12th-placed Newell's Old Boys beat Independiente 2-0 in their last match.

Match preview

Newell's Old Boys had been on a five-game winless run in all competitions ahead of their clash with Independiente last time out, but they managed to record a 2-0 victory at Estadio Libertadores de America, with Cristian Ferreira and Gustavo Velazquez both on the scoresheet.

Gabriel Heinze's side have picked up 33 points from their 24 league matches this season, which has left them in 12th position in the table.

Newell's Old Boys have won the Primera Division on six previous occasions, with their last success coming in 2013, but they finished down in 11th position in the 2022 campaign.

The Rosario-based outfit have another three league matches against Tucuman, Boca Juniors and Talleres before taking on either Corinthians or Universitario in the last-16 stage of the Copa Sudamericana.

Tucuman, meanwhile, will enter this match in excellent form, having won each of their last three league matches against Union, Huracan and Gimnasia La Plata to rise up the table.

El Gigante del Norte have actually won four of their last five in the league, with their only disappointment during an excellent run proving to be the 4-1 defeat at Sarmiento at the end of June.

Marcelo Estigarribia sent Tucuman ahead against Gimnasia La Plata last time out before an own goal from Guillermo Enrique doubled the home side's advantage.

Lucas Pusineri's side have picked up 30 points this season courtesy of a record of seven wins, nine draws and eight defeats, which has left them in 16th position in the table.

Tucuman will also play another three league games before the end of the month, following this fixture with matches against Independiente (H) and Central Cordoba (A).

Team News

Newell's Old Boys will again be without the services of Fabian Angel on Monday, with the midfielder missing due to a knee problem.

Jorge Recalde has been in strong form this season, finding the back of the net on six occasions, and he will continue in the final third of the field for Heinze's side.

There are not expected to be any real surprises when it comes to the home side's XI, with Marcos Portillo also set to retain his position in the middle of the midfield.

Tucuman, meanwhile, will be unable to call upon Lucas Naranjo, with the midfielder currently on the sidelines with a knee issue.

Mateo Coronel has been in impressive form for the visitors this season, scoring seven times in all competitions, and the 24-year-old will again be a certain starter.

Estigarribia has also contributed five goals, and he is set to continue alongside Coronel in a front two, with Joaquin Pereyra operating in a deeper midfield role for Pusineri's side.

Newell's Old Boys possible starting lineup:
Hoyos; Mendez, Velazquez, Ortiz, Martino; Perez, Portillo, Ferreira; Perez, Recalde, Aguirre

Atletico Tucuman possible starting lineup:
Marchiori; Ortiz, Bianchi, Romero, Orihuela; Tesuri, Acosta, Pereyra, Sanchez; Coronel, Estigarribia

We say: Newell's Old Boys 1-2 Atletico Tucuman

Tucuman's recent form is difficult to ignore when picking a result here, and we have just about sided with the visitors on Monday. Newell's Old Boys will view this as a match which they should win, but the hosts have been inconsistent of late and could come up just short against their in-form opponents.
